auto-nice daemon vs. CFEngine
27 Jun 2014 Recently, my FreeBSD system at work was being crippled due to certain processes running at normal priority that weren’t playing nice and weren’t really that high of priority compared to what I needed to get done on the system.

update sysutils/devcpu-data with Intel microcode-20140624
26 Jun 2014 While cleaning up some obsolete promises in a CFEngine policy, namely the update sysutils/devcpu-data after its installed with the latest microcodes. I spotted that Intel had released a new microcode bundle on June 24th. So, I updated this port to that microcode release. It doesn’t contain newer microcode for my CPUs though.

Where did my git go?
14 Jun 2014 In trying to commit the work I had done to sysutils/screen, I soon found another port that required my fiddling with. devel/git, which I suspected was during one of the huge portmaster update runs, it had bombed out by leaving this port uninstalled, so that subsequent portmaster update runs wouldn’t know that I wanted it on my system and that it should be updating it. Annoying how some packages will fail to install late in the update/reinstallation stage and that portmaster doesn’t rollback to the previous version, especially since it made a backup package (at least it should’ve, though its also been told to ignore errors when attempting to create one.)

Let's annoy the users of screen again
14 Jun 2014 So, back on April 30th, 2014, the sysutils/screen port was updated from version 4.0.3_14 to 4.2.1. One of the annoyances that resulted from this was that existing 4.0 screen sessions became inaccessible. There was a portrevision on May 1st for 4.2.1_1 to fix colour in hardstatus (upstream patch) and remove some options that could get patched into 4.0 (which appear to be part of 4.2.1 now), and later without a PORTREVISION bump on May 23rd to add LICENSE. But, then early this morning (for a PR entered late afternoon yesterday) to change the socket.c code to use FIFOs instead of sockets, to be backward compability with what 4.0’s configure had selected.

Update devel/pybugz to 0.10.1
8 Jun 2014 In the announcement of FreeBSD switch from GNATS to Bugzilla, there was reference to this port. And, in the source and readme was reference to ~/.bugzrc. Except the ports version (0.9.3) there’s nothing in the code to use a config file.

sysutils/devcpu-data get's updated...sort of
6 Jun 2014 I’ve been working on my own update to this port for sometime, where the stumbling block has been trying to locate a tool to decode AMD microcode files. The attempt to resurrect devel/ruby-mmap was related to the attempt. At that time, I was trying to update the port to use Intel microcode-20130906.tgz and amd-ucode-latest.tar.bz2 with internal file dates of 20130925.

Revisiting: libxml2 update breaks my cfengine
1 Jun 2014 On, April 20th, I wrote how the libxml2 update broke my cfengine, due to cf-agent not being able to find the libxml2.so library after its version changed. And, that I addressed the problem by partially linking cf-agent (and cf-promises) statically. This involved using the libtool option ‘-static-libtool-libs’. To cause cf-agent and cf-promises to get linked against the static libraries for the libraries have libtool definitions. In this case, libpromises, libxml2 and libiconv.

devel/gdcm update fails when graphics/openjpeg is installed
31 May 2014 graphics/openjpeg was recently updated to v1.5.2 and shortly after that upgraded to v2.1, with the v1.5.2 moved to graphics/openjpeg15. Since there were a few ports that needed it. devel/gdcm is one of those ports.

Update math/orpie to 1.5.2
26 May 2014 While searching around on how to do something with orpie, which I still haven’t gotten around to doing, I noticed that on 04/11/2014 there had been a new version (1.5.2).

deskutils/recoll was updated to 1.19.13, but ran into problems updating
18 May 2014 On May 7, 2014, this port was updated to version 1.19.13 (previous was 1.19.10.) I didn’t get around to try to update until around May 18. Where there were problems with it trying to install build dependencies that were already installed. Fixing the *_DEPENDS lines to look for files that exist in the port fixed that. Next there was a problem in pkg-plist, which hadn’t been updated from the previous and didn’t reflect the comment about getting working with STAGING. The commit message gives a clear pointer to the problem with pkg-plist.

dns/bind99 now wants security/openssl, but I don't!
18 May 2014 Today when I updated 'dns/bind99' to 9.9.5_16. Where, I found it suddenly wanted 'security/openssl'. But, I don't. Since this breaks everything else that is using base openssl. So, I avoid ports or port options that want this.

In looking for something to handle DICOM files on FreeBSD, I tried to build math/octave-forge
16 May 2014 I tried to build math/octave-forge, since under this meta-port was math/octave-forge-dicom which was the first port I could track down that depended on devel/gdcm – “Grassroots DICOM library”. But, the build didn’t go so well, as it kept failing because of some command wasn’t found, or some expected library or header was missing.

Fixed some annoyances I see in periodic emails
7 May 2014 Every time I look at the various periodic emails from my FreeBSD systems, there are certain error messages that keep appearing that are kind of annoying. So, overtime I’ve made tweaks to some of the standard system periodic scripts to address the issues. Recently I thought, maybe I should see if they are PR worthy.

www/nginx updated to 1.6.0, TCP_PROXY disabled
6 May 2014 Yesterday the port updated from 1.4.7 to 1.6.0, but seems a number of 3rd party modules were disabled rather than the maintainer tracking down updates for them. I use TCP_PROXY...

gnome-keyring-daemon: couldn't allocate secure memory
1 May 2014 Keep seeing the annoying message of "gnome-keyring-daemon: couldn't allocate secure memory to keep passwords or keys from being written to the disk" on my FreeBSD system. And, it continues even after I had set "security.bsd.unprivileged_mlock=1" back on December 20, 2013. The default resource limit RLIMIT_MEMLOCK is 64k, which I would think is more than sufficient.

revisiting gmirror(8) says to use rc.early which is no longer available
29 Apr 2014 All of a sudden, my FreeBSD system at work has been panic'ng. But no crash dumps getting saved. Evidently, the proposed fix through dumpon isn't sufficient. Perhaps this quick patch to savecore is needed as well...

print/hplip issues revisited
27 Apr 2014 So, I had started working on this patch to print/hplip, but got distracted by life/work. And, when I came back to it found that print/hplip had been updated to 3.14.4, and addressed some of the issues. Though it went the hpcups way which is a pretty good way to go. I decided that I wanted to still submit the hacking I had done to getting hpijs working…

GitHub Pages Plugin to linkify PR: references?
27 Apr 2014 After I had written many posts with “PR:” lines everywhere with the internal identification string assigned to my problem report submission. It occurred to me that it might be nice if it turned into the link to PR itself.

libxml2 update breaks my cfengine
20 Apr 2014 Due to the library version of libxml2 being brought in line with what upstream expects, my cfengine installations broke. Even though I did reinstall systuils/cfengine35 as part of this work. Problem is cf-execd is trying to run cf-agent from /var/cfengine/bin, so it can't update itself or do anything.
